The 11 Credit Dispute Plays

A charge-off, a collection, a medical bill and a repossession each have completely different weak points. One generic “this isn’t mine” letter gets a generic denial on all four. This guide gives you the specific play for each one.

Why this one

Most credit guides online are copies of copies.

There is a whole genre of recycled credit repair PDFs passing the same errors from one to the next. Three that are corrected in this guide:

  • Medical debt is not protected by a federal rule. The CFPB rule was vacated by a federal court in July 2025 and never took effect. What still works is 2023 bureau policy plus state law.
  • The seven-year clock is not seven years. For a collection or charge-off it runs from 180 days after the date of first delinquency.
  • Section 609 letters do not delete anything. That section is a file disclosure provision. The real leverage sits elsewhere in the FCRA.

A good fit if

  • You pulled your report and do not recognise half of what is on it.
  • You have been declined and want to know the actual reason.
  • You would rather spend an afternoon than $99 a month.

Not a good fit if

  • You want someone else to do the paperwork for you.
  • You are looking for a way to remove accurate negative information.
  • You want a guaranteed score by a specific date.

One thing this guide will not do. It covers removing inaccurate items, which is defense. A clean report with no positive history is still a file no lender can evaluate. The rebuilding half is in the full edition, and there is a note about it at the end of the PDF.
